The recent devastating earthquakes in Haiti, Chile, and China and the resulting Chile tsunami underscore the need for preventative mitigation and restoration efforts for these countries, and for the many bridges, tunnels, railroads, highways, and other infrastructure in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world that my be in danger of collapse - partial or total - in the event of an earthquake, tsunami, storm, or other natural stress. President Obama is urging government funding of at least $75 billion for the repair, reconstruction, and replacement of aging and deteriorating bridges, highways, roads, and other infrastructure in the United States.
